Have you ever wondered about the life in ocean/lake/pond/streams? Have thought about how many different kinds of fishes are there?
Well you will be surprised to know that there are more than 25000 different types of fishes living in oceans, lakes, ponds, and streams. Fish are vertebrates which are animals with backbone. Just like humans fishes need oxygen to survive in water. They use their gills that help them to breathe. Unlike humans, fishes can’t breath air and that is why they die when they are taken out of water. They take water and gills absorb oxygen from water.

There are so many different types of fishes. But they can be broadly categorized in four different categories.

  • Tropical Fish
These are the fish that can live in either freshwater or saltwater. They need warm or tropical medium temperature to survive. Usually tropical fishes are bright colored and you can see them in aquarium.
  • Coldwater Fish
The coldwater fishes basically need colder water temperature. Typically these types of fish need temperature below 20 °C. Goldfish and koi are the most common types of coldwater fish. These fishes tend to grow at a slower pace and also live longer than the ones in warm waters.
  • Marine Fish
Marine fishes can be found in salt water and need tropical temperature to survive. Clown fish, Tiger fish and Angel fishes are good examples.
  • Freshwater Fish
Fresh water fishes are mostly found in fresh water such as rivers and lakes.
